Surfaces

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 supports large surfaces, with memory mapped surfaces of several million points. The process is invisible to the user and results in a surface file being written to the drawing folder and automatically referenced into the drawing. Tools to weed and thin surface data and restrict data to a region help to reduce drawing overhead and enable designs to be created accurately.

Criteria Based Road Design

Simple user-defined rule-sets to enable you to adhere to local design criteria can be created for both alignments and profiles. In addition, national highway standards can be stored in XML file and applied to both horizontal and vertical design. These standards files include speed-based criteria for horizontal radii, super-elevation control, and minimum K values for stopping, sight and headlight distances. An integrated editor allows you to set up your design standards quickly and easily. During the design process, interactive warning symbols are placed in the drawing to alert the user to the design flaw.

Creating corridor models in has never been easier, with the ability to combine the benefits of template based deign using assemblies, with string based targeting of polylines, feature lines and alignments to control offset alignment and profile. Improved sub-assemblies for super-elevation control are included in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009, and creating assemblies is made faster by the ability to move and mirror sub-assemblies.

Mass Haul Diagrams

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 can now produce mass haul diagrams from your corridor surfaces, enabling vital planning and cost control for the movement of material across the site. The diagrams can include borrow pit and dump sites

Drainage Design

A utility to enable you to quickly rename and renumber pipe network components means that you can create your network with the exact naming structure that you need for your documentation. There is improved support for multi-segments pipes and pipe-to-pipe joins, with spanning labels and pipe join cleanup in both plan and profile.

Three new applications are included with AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 to enable you to analyse your drainage designs:-

• Hydraflow Storm Sewers Extension for AutoCAD Civil 3D is an easy-to-use, full-featured storm sewer design and analysis package.
• Hydraflow Hydrographs Extension is a comprehen­sive solution for watershed analysis and deten­tion pond design, from simple sites to complex watersheds with interconnected ponds.
• Hydraflow Express Extension provides a collection of powerful calculators that solve everyday hydraulics and hydrology problems for culverts, channels, inlets, hydrology, and weirs.

Whilst these are not yet localised for the UK market, they are well worth a closer look.

Drawing Production

One of the best new features of AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009 is the ability to x-ref design drawings into a production drawing and create labels and annotation through the x-ref. The annotation can reference all of the underlying data in the x-ref’d design objects, and will remain dynamic. If the design changes, the annotation will update automatically when the x-ref is reloaded. A new cross-section production wizard will step you through the process of creating and laying out cross-section sheets with the exact style and annotation you require.

Data Management

When working on larger projects, the ability to share design objects throughout the design team is key. Although Autodesk Vault is still included with this version of AutoCAD Civil 3D, for those that do not want the additional management overhead that Vault requires, the improved data shortcuts are an ideal alternative. The new data shortcuts can be accessed from the Civil 3D toolspace, and a new data shortcut interface makes them easier to create. There is even a stand alone management application to enable CAD or project managers to control and maintain project access.
